Basically, it's a song that isn't a Konami Original; they paid the original artist/record label to obtain a license to put their song in the game. To use a well known song as an example, Tubthumping by Chumbawamba is a license; Konami paid Chumbawamba to use that song in DDR. Hope that answers it. _________________

Take out artists in your example and I think it'd be 100% accurate. The deals are made with the record lables when dealing with big names.
In your example the record lable is paid directly, not Chumbawamba. They get royalties handed down to them IIRC. _________________

Also note that a lot of people like them, and that nobody asked for your opinion on them. _________________

No. Some are, plenty aren't. There's plenty of god-awful KOs coming out now too so I don't know where that was coming from. _________________

So, for example would Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy in DDR SuperNOVA be a licensed song?

Why? Are they different from the original or something? _________________

Yes.

A lot of people hate them because some licenses have terrible steps, others hate them because they're not "Japanese" enough or too "Americanized", others hate them because they're a horrible cover of what may or may not be a horrible song.
Still, it's not fair to make a blanket statement about licensed songs. So Deep's steps and song are both for the most part popular in the DDR community, and that's a license. |
