I'm talking about this pad:
We all know its crap. That's why I want better performance by modding it since I'm not ready to shell out 100 bucks on a metal one.
So, any ideas? |

I was thinking of that, but wouldn't a staple gun kill the sensors? |

...Just don't staple where the sensors are. They don't cover the whole underside of the button (I think), so if you staple on the edges you should be okay. I'm not positive, though, 'cause I've never done it. |

Go to walmart's fabric section (or the fabric store) and get a sheet of vinyl. It should only cost $1-$3.
Cut your plywood down to size, lay out a grid pattern of carpet tape on the plywood.
Stick your soft pad to the plywood
Cut your vinyl down to size and put that over your dance pad
Duct tape the the sides of the vinyl down to the plywood
Tada. Easy. and it looks nice too if you go sparingly on the duct tape.
BTW, black tape looks nicer than gray tape. |

I did this slightly differently. I used 4 pieces of puzzle piece foam (available at Home Depot) and hard wood floor runner plastic stuff (also available at Home Depot), cut the foam to the right size for the pad and duct taped the plastic on top of it. I even left the puzzle piece connectors on the one side so that I could hook a second to it for doubles (though I never did get around to making a second one).
It lasted me for about 8 months of fairly constant use on heavy mode. I think I ended up trashing the pad because the cover started to come apart, but the sensors still worked well. It was also very portable. Just take off a few strips of duct tape, fold the mat, roll the plastic and take the puzzle piece foam apart. _________________
