Excuse me to introduce a new philosophical concept in this game forum but I really feel the concept is unifying at least 50% of the debates around here.

Are you an utilitarist or a deontologist ?

An utilitarist is someone who is acting to achieve the best result no matter the way used to achieve it.
A deontologist is someone who is acting to achieve the best result with strict consideration on the way used to achieve it.

For example, I include especially the following debates :
Bar vs No bar
Speed mod vs no speed mod
Song whorer vs sightread

And indirectly :
Home vs Arcade
Crossover vs Doublestep
No mods vs 20 unreadable mods

This is mainly the question of Performance vs Merit. Do you prefer to have the best score in the world or to have the best score by playing no bar, no speed mod, arcade only ? I personnally tend to prefer the first choice; being myself a DDR-ITG utilitarist.

My problem with a DDR-ITG deontologist view is where do they fix the limit of merit ? Impressive!, you can play that song no bar, 1x! But, can you play it with astronaut boots, eye closed and music off ?!

Utilitarists and deontologists usually can't have the same opinion on such a dividing concept.

You drive a car at 4 oclock in the morning. You are stucked at an isolated intersection where no one is ever passing. The light is red. How long would you wait until you decide to pass the red light by yourself ? The time you would wait is a continous measure of the side you are tending. I would probably wait no more than 5-10 seconds.

I'm half of both. I have no problems with bar raping, but I frown upon speed mods. I guess I'm just weird.

Those are not accurate descriptions of those philosophical concepts at all.

Further, deontology, as popularly expressed by Kant, relies to some extent on utilitarianism to work.

Well, I am sort of like Maxx Freak in that I like the bar, but I usually prefer not to use speed modifiers -- I am sort of the type of person who likes to be natural, so I almost always play on normal speed. I use the bar only if I do not believe I can pass (or score a fraction-way decently) a song -- nowadays, I do not believe I use the bar for anything under nine feet, definitely nothing under eight (old 10-foot scale). I at least used to consider myself a casual player -- I first tried the game a little more than two years ago and have been playing regularly since last October (not counting Dance Praise which would make it November 2006) and my current limit is about seven or eight feet (nine to eleven on the new scale -- I have to use the bar just to make a B or C on Destiny Lovers expertO_o). I wonder what qualifies someone to be considered a hardcore player. I am not familiar with those philosophies, but based on the definitions given, I am more of a deontologist -- I always like to do things the proper/right/appropriate/ethical way (I am the type of person who will not cheat or bend rules even when I know I might be able to get away with it easily). Is "song whoring" playing the same song repeatedly to familiarize oneself with the stepchart? If so, my stance on that is that I consider sight-reading more impressive, but I am still liable to watch a song I like on youtube or something, not bothering to make sure I do not pay enough attention to spoil myself when I try the song myself. I do not know what you mean by "20 different unreadable mods" or whatever you typed.

I suppose I'm simply weird, then.

I play no bar, though if I'm going to fall or begin to lose my balance, which does happen occasionally on really hard stages (17+ ones), I won't hesitate to make a saving grab, or to push myself with it to spin. I don't hold on to it for the entirety of a song, however.

I do play for score, but I also play for showmanship. I'm the kind of player that will pull off a spin or a slide sequence during an Oni Mode course, or during a normal game while *still* playing for score. I'm talking songs like TRIP MACHINE CLIMAX here, too. And yet, I've still managed to achieve 40-or-so "EXTREME" AAA's... but have yet to get more than 2 on SuperNOVA timing, yet. :|

Speed mods, I can take or leave. Sometimes I feel like using them, sometimes I don't. If I'm feeling up to a challenge, I'll play 3x Reverse Mirror Hidden Dark, or something to that effect*. I've gotta be *really* sunk in before I go that far, though. I usually leave them off during Random Select, which I do use fairly often.

Also, I don't bash others for however they choose to play. It's their money too, you know. E13.gif I just know better than to enter tourneys (which are now like consistent "AAA-or-die") with any expectation of winning a prize. I just attend them for social reasons.

Everybody I talk to seems to think I'm pretty good, though.

* - Once, I made an index card game, with 6 songs on one side, and 6 sets of crazy, but passable modifer sets on the other side. I would then draw one at random, per stage, roll a song, and roll a modifer set for it. Sometimes it involved completely crazy mods on STANDARD, like 5x shuffle, or few-to-no-mods on a set of songs that didn't need them to be fun/challenging. PSM, SAKURA, A, DAIKENKAI, D.D.R., and V were one batch of songs that come to mind; and I think one set of CHALLENGE mods was simply Boost Reverse Hidden.

Not really either. I play home more than arcade because it's cheaper, I use speed mods because it makes it easier. At the arcade, I try not to rape the bar (except on certain 10's).

Really, it's a question of your play preference. If someone always plays x1 no bar when they know they can do better with/ would like to try speed mods, or really thinks they could [insert accomplishment here] with the bar, then I think that's stupid. Of course, if they are comfortable playing that way and don't want/need mods or the bar, that's normal.

That being said, doing something no bar with x1 or six mods is certainly more impressive then doing it with a more "normal" play style, but that doesn't mean you should play that way all the time.
