How is front page connected to Announcements forum?

Greetings. I was wondering how DDRFreak's front page was connected to the PHPBB2 goodies behind the forums. Namely how it grabbed the post text and a comment count from the "announcements" forum. Is it a mod I have just overlooked from PHPBB? custom code?

I use PHPBB2 as as my 'blogging software....but I'd like to have a front page for my site that looked more "bloggey" by just taking the most recent entries, putting the text from the entry up, and then providing a link to replies with a reply count (very much like the DDRFreak front page)

I searched for a bit but couldn't find anything about how this was done, so if this was addressed in the past, I apologize for reposting the question.

I know that on my Invisionfree forums, there's an option in the Admin CP where you can select one of your forums to be a "news" forums where the front page will display any posts/threads in that news forums.

I'm assuming that PHPBB2 works the same way.

I think that ddruk.com does that too.

Well how to display the NEWs.

Example : Display News about ddr supernova
Under it, Display another news about their site blah blah or released of the BM US Ver.

Ours is a custom hack, though you can achieve the same exact results with phpBB Fetch All.

The best part about Fetch All is that you:
1) Don't have to come up with the queries yourself (which would be the alternative... but bleh, why reinvent the wheel?)
2) You don't have to make ANY modifications to phpBB itself.

I got the fetchall mod, and it was a better mod for what I needed. It even had a portal example in the downloaded source code.
