PIU is weird. I played it at Dae and Busters, it had a funny song called "Monkey Magic". I kept missing the diaganol panels and stepping where the DDR one's would be. _________________

Yes, it was VERY weird. I was able to pass songs on "Normal" (ie "beginner) mode, but only with speed mods, which are a huge pain in the butt to set (it's with arrow codes, not an option menu). The next step up was completely baffling. Besides diagonal arrows not registering in your head, when you see a bunch of them, it's like you have no idea how the sequence is supposed to move you around the pad. The other thing is that it feels really weird because the arrows are spread farther apart... makes you feel bow-legged |

PIU=way too weird
Haven't played ITG yet, but looking forward to it.
And yes, it is way cool to have an actual arcade machine, esp since I bought it at a garage sale for only $75! It worked for a couple of years before kids jumping on it, turning it on and off, etc blew a fuse. But it was a quick fix and only cost me $35. So $110 for a working Scramble, vintage 1981? Can't beat it. But I can still only make it past 1 level.
Back to old folk stuff - the weather here today is overcast. We actually had a hailstorm yesterday. After playing for 45 min a day for the last two days, I woke up today with incredible hip pain, the worst I've had in maybe 6 months. I was feeling ancient and despondent until I met up with two other women my age, who both have usually mild arthritis and bursitis - they also said that their joints were killing them today. Damn, we're old. Soon we're going to be walking around saying in creaky voices, "I can tell we got a storm coming by my hip/big toe/left knee/whatever." _________________

I like Pump It Up, but I haven't played it in over a year (since they took it out of NYDS). With speed codes I can pass most of the songs on Hard and a few of the easiest ones on Expert. |

Did you experience a learning curve, or were you able to pretty much get right into it? For me, it feels so weird to feel so confused, now that DDR has become somewhat reflexive.
And AuntieM, have you tried Glucosamine/Chondroitin? I had hip problems a couple years ago, and taking those for a few months made a huge difference (once they finally kicked in) |

There was a learning curve, but not as steep as it was with DDR for me. The first day of PIU I was stepping on the metal a lot. That was my biggest problem. Related to that, the panels are placed a little too far apart so it takes some bow-leggedness to play it. After a few games I was pretty comfortable with passing the easier songs on normal. I was stuck on Normal for quite awhile because I didn't know about the speed code. Once I used the speed code, I instantly could get an A on all the Normal songs and was able to do most Hard songs. The only songs I was having trouble with when I stopped playing were the total stamina drainers and the ones with weird freeze arrows. |

When I first started, I picked this song that was about 160bpm, and since I was feeling lazy and it was "normal" mode, I said "screw it, I don't need speed mods for this"... and then literally 3 seconds into the song, "Uh yeah, I DO need speed mods for this"
But even with mods, the Hard songs still have parts that freeze me up. I also find myself going into "DDR mode" when I get confused and don't have time to think... eg, an arrow is coming up the 2nd column from the left, so I start to step where the down arrow ought to be. |

Well guys I'm BACK I haven't been on this board for at least nine months as I gave up on DDR MAX. However, I now have a new PS2 and am playing DDR Extreme.
Hi Danburi--you know me as Cruella. I didn't know why I chose Little Lulu for this board. As I even have an avatar for Cruella.
Anyway, I started playing again as soon as I got my PS2 in late February. I'm doing very well in Beginner. I've gotten AA*s on songs. Funny how I do the best with songs between 140 and 160 bpm and lousy when songs slow down below 120. However, I'm disappointed with myself that I can't move onto the light level I also noticed that that I don't follow the same footwork for the down arrow as shown in the lessons and with the dancer dudess. (That is, I never use my right foot for the down arrow.) Is this a problem? Should I care?
Can you turn those freeze arrows off? And, there's no way that I'm going into an arcade. I'm just too old and right now too fat. I'm getting terrific workouts with DDR, but I need to stop playing to mix in some strength training and other total body workouts.
Any tips or advice, please jump in. |

If you're trying to improve (and it sounds like you are), then yeah, it's a problem. First off, don't pay attention to the on-screen dancer. That teaches you the WRONG way to play, because that person stays in the middle of the pad. You should be trying to alternate your feet, so that you're comfortable hitting any arrow with either foot (even the left arrow with your right foot, and vice versa). But your #1 priority should be to abandon the middle of the pad. |

Hello LittleLuLu, thatâs cute name
First of all, for slower songs, I like to use speed mod to speed up the arrow a bit. Since you have PS2, You can do this at song selection screen. Once you get to the song you want to play and step on the X or Circle Button, Keep your foot there until Option screen open. There you can change speed to 1.5x, 2x and so on. Try 1.5x and see how you like it. In the same menu, you will find Freeze on/off option too. Keep in mind that these changes will stay until you change it again or turn off the game. Youâll need to do this every time you start the game. Regards to your right foot on the down arrow, I have same problem. I tend to use left foot only on down and right foot on up. But it is very good idea to use both feet on all the arrows. Later in heavy mode, if you can use left foot on right arrows and right foot on left arrow will make life much easier. Iâm still working on that but not doing too well. I know in my head I need to do it but as soon as song start, my head is no longer remembering what was suppose to do
Moving to light, try some songs that are easy to pick up the beat. How about Kick the can? Only you is fun too if you speed up a bit.
Adding strength training is great way to get total workout. Iâve been going to gym once a week (I missed last 4 weeks though). Itâs not much but every little bit helps
See you in other board too |

Thanks for the speedy reply guys.
I will try to work on using my right foot for the down arrow. I'll start in the lesson mode so I won't be so concerned about my "letter" grade. Hey us old folks need rewards too!
And, actually, Kick The Can is my favorite song. The beat is good and the footwork simple. (Also, it's the closest thing to classical that we'll ever hear. Now, there's an idea, programing a game to Bach or Beethoven! )
I will also try Only You--which is slow.
I'm not sure what you mean, Slowpoke, by not standing in the middle. I do tend to go back to the middle after each beat--it actually adds more steps, which is fine for beginner, but I can see it not working at the other levels. But, improve I will. It's a great challenge and ego boost for me, while sweating away the pounds.
I'll let you know how it works out. |

Exactly... it sounds like you totally have the idea. When you step on an arrow, try keeping it there instead of going back to the middle, and then use your other foot to hit the next arrow... keep "walking" around the pad that way. The only time you'd want to use the same foot twice in a row is if it's the same arrow twice in a row (obviously) or if using your other foot would force you to turn away from the screen. |

Welcome Lulu,
I just started playing DDR in December on PS2 with Extreme. I also do not use my right foot in beginner to hit the down arrow. And I step back to center in beginner to tap the beat. Going through the lessons section should help you to move on to Light and then practice in Training. At Light level, the only songs I modify the speed on are ones with diagonal arrows or continous fast steps. In light you do need to keep your feet on the arrows instead of coming back center all the time. My main problem now is keeping moving instead of rooting myself down on the pad. Hopefully once my legs are stronger and I lose some weight this problem will go away.
Also try out the assist (clap, metrone) in the training mode to help tell you when to step.
Keep dancing and have fun. |

Thanks for all of the advice.
Although last night wasn't a particularly good gaming night (low scores), I tried to use my right foot on the down arrows. I also tried Kick the Can and Only You in the Light mode. And, now I can see why you need to use your right foot for the down arrow. I just need more practice. I tired light mode on DDR MAX--that was a joke.
While I love the praise, the booing is really annoying!
Diagonal arrows? What do you do with them? You tap the circle and the X squares? I don't think that I'm ready for that yet.
I could DDR all day and night--yeah until the novelty wears--which it hasn't at least for the first month. |

Huh? There are no diagonal arrows in DDR, unless you're talking about Solo Mode (6-panel mode) on Konamix and the Solo machines. Did you mean corner jumps by any chance? _________________

Actually, there are a few songs that have themes from classical music:
Dream a Dream has the theme called In the Hall of the Mountain King from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite,
End of the Century has Beethoven's Ode to Joy theme from his 9th symphony,
Speed over Beethoven is from Fur Elise,
V for Extreme has Vivaldi's Winter from the Four Seasons,
and one of the other songs (Kakumei? I think it's written in Japanese) has some etude by Chopin.
There's actually a thread specifically about classical music in DDR which I can't find now after 10 minutes of searching, ( ) but I think I might have all of them there. All of them are on the Extreme arcade machine except for Dream a Dream, which is on Max2 for PS2 if you have that, and one of the other arcade machines. I just checked Song Lists (http://www.ddrfreak.com/versions/listver.php) and it looks like the others are on Max2 except for Speed over, which doesn't look like is on PS2.
But aren't they supercool? I love the fact the creativity. Almost makes me want to listen to videogame music outside of playing. Wait; I do already...
What do you think of the remakes of American disco, dance and pop? I must admit I really prefer them to the original songs and the other types of pop. _________________

Lulu,
Sorry to be confusing. By diagonal I mean the jumps that are right/up, right/down, left/up & left/down. Songs with these jumps are the ones I generally modify the speed to 1.5.
I have also started a note book to keep track of the stats on each song and notes regarding type of steps, speed of song, mod speed (if necessary), scores, etc. This way I don't have to remember which songs need work, which ones I hate, which are very easy...
For a good work out, try Endless mode on (at the moment) Beginner.
Keep stepping! |

6 footers, try songs with simple 8th note runs like blonde girl or something. |
