i have to say when i got my level six ignition it smelled like plastic really bad too. after about a day it goes away so i guess that is just normal for those pads.

hard foam but the raised arrow part seems to be inbetween the senor and the top of the pad like when u zip the pad open it has nothing to do with the foam
